Foundation: what “cleansing” means

• Cleansing in Scripture is being made clean/fit to draw near to Yahuah, to remain in covenant fellowship, and to serve in a set-apart way.
• It includes:
  • Removal of defilement/uncleanness
  • Forgiveness of sin/guilt (when atonement is provided)
  • Consecration (being set apart for His presence and purpose)

Old Covenant pattern (shadows / teaching images)

Under the Torah, cleansing was shown through visible, repeated practices that taught spiritual realities.

1) Washings with water

• Washings were required in many situations (for priests, after certain uncleanness, etc.).
• These washings taught:
  • Yahuah is set-apart
  • Uncleanness is real and must be dealt with
  • Approaching Him requires being made clean

2) Blood for purification/atonement

• Blood was used in offerings and purification rites.
• It taught that cleansing from sin requires Yahuah’s provision of atonement and life-for-life covering.

3) Repetition pointed forward

• The repeated nature of washings and offerings taught that the system was instructional and forward-looking—not the final, once-for-all cleansing of the inner person.

New Covenant fulfillment: cleansing becomes internal (Spirit-enabled)

The New Covenant does not remove the need for cleansing—it fulfills what the shadows were pointing to.

The core promise

• Yahuah promised to cleanse His people and to put His Spirit within them, producing a life of obedience from the heart.
