Study: Gossip + Plotting Vain Imaginations

1) What gossip is (and what it does)

• Gossip / talebearing / slander: speaking about someone in a way that tears down, spreads suspicion, or harms a name — especially when it is not your place to share, not verified, or not done in love and truth.
• Gossip often:
  • stirs strife and division
  • carries accusations without witnesses
  • spreads “stories” that feel true but aren’t proven
  • makes you partner with the accuser instead of the Restorer

2) Scriptures that expose gossip / slander

• Leviticus 19:16 — “You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people…”
• Proverbs 11:13 — A talebearer reveals secrets; a faithful spirit conceals a matter.
• Proverbs 16:28 — A whisperer separates close friends.
• Proverbs 18:8 / 26:20–22 — Whispered words go down deep; without wood, fire goes out.
• Psalm 15:1–3 — Who can dwell with YAH? The one who does not slander.
• Ephesians 4:29 — No corrupt speech; only what builds up and gives grace.
• James 3:5–10 — The tongue can set a whole life on fire; blessing and cursing should not come from the same mouth.
• Matthew 12:36–37 — Account for every idle word.

3) “Plotting vain imaginations” (what it means)

• “Vain” imaginations are empty, proud, rebellious, or fear-based thought patterns that resist truth.
• “Plotting” is when the mind and tongue partner together to build a narrative (assumptions, suspicions, rehearsed offenses) instead of seeking truth and peace.

4) Scriptures about plotting / vain imaginations

• Acts 4:25 / Psalm 2:1 — “Why did the nations rage, and the people plot vain things?”
• Genesis 6:5 — Every imagination of the thoughts of the heart was only evil continually.
• 2 Corinthians 10:4–5 — Cast down arguments/imaginations; take every thought captive to obedience.
