Soul (Heb. nephesh, Gk. psyche)
Often refers to the whole living person / life / self — your conscious life, desires, emotions, will, and identity as a living being.
Spirit (Heb. ruach, Gk. pneuma)
Often refers to the life-breath and the inner, God-aware dimension of a person — the part that relates to Elohiym, receives illumination, and is made alive by Him.
Genesis 2:7 — “And YAHUAH Elohiym formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
(Soul = the living being that results when body + life-breath come together.)
Deuteronomy 6:5 — “You shall love YAHUAH your Elohiym with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”
(Soul = your whole self/life devoted in love.)
Matthew 16:26 — “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
(Soul = your life/self that can be “lost” by exchanging it for the world.)
Leviticus 17:11 — “For the life of the flesh is in the blood…”
(Often “life” here connects to nephesh.)
(Soul is frequently tied to “life” as a living being.)
Psalm 42:5 — “Why are you cast down, O my soul?”
Psalm 62:1 — “Truly my soul waits upon Elohiym…”
Psalm 103:1 — “Bless YAHUAH, O my soul…”
Psalm 131:2 — “Surely I have behaved and quieted myself… as a weaned child… so is my soul within me.”
(Soul can be calmed — emotions/desires brought into submission.)
Matthew 11:29 — “And you shall find rest unto your souls.”
(The soul needs rest — inner life can be burdened.)
3 John 1:2 — “…I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.”
(Soul can prosper — inner life can grow healthy.)
James 1:21 — “…receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”
(The Word heals/saves the inner self-life: mind, will, emotions.)
