Study focus: Words are not empty sounds. Scripture teaches that words reveal the heart, release life or death, bless or curse, build or destroy, and will be brought into judgment. Guarding the mouth is part of spiritual warfare, holiness, wisdom, and obedience to YAHUAH.

Foundation: Words carry life, death, blessing, and judgment

• Death and life are in the power of the tongue. What is spoken can nourish life or release destruction.

• Words can bless or curse. The same mouth should not bless YAHUAH and curse those made in His likeness.

Words reveal the condition of the heart

• The mouth speaks from the abundance of the heart. Guarding the mouth begins with guarding the heart.

• An unclean heart produces unclean speech. Gossip, slander, lying, railing, bitterness, and corrupt words are fruit that must be judged and repented of.

The need to guard the mouth

• Ask YAHUAH to set a watch over the mouth. The tongue needs discipline, prayer, and surrender.

• Speak less when anger, fear, offense, or pride is active. Quick speech can open a door to sin.

Words as spiritual warfare

• The enemy uses words to tempt, accuse, deceive, and plant seeds. Guard what enters the ears and what comes out of the mouth.
