Judges 8:27 — Breakdown

Verse:

“And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.” — Judges 8:27

1. Context: What happened before this?

Gideon had just experienced a major victory.

YAHUAH used him to deliver Israel from the Midianites. After the victory, the Israelites wanted Gideon to rule over them like a king.

But Gideon said:

“I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: YAHUAH shall rule over you.”

— Judges 8:23

That sounded righteous. Gideon verbally acknowledged that YAHUAH was Israel’s true King.

But then Gideon asked the people for gold from the spoils of war. With that gold, he made an ephod and placed it in his hometown, Ophrah.

That ephod became an idol-like object, and Israel began to spiritually prostitute themselves with it.

2. What is an ephod?

An ephod was a priestly garment connected to worship and seeking direction from YAHUAH.

In the Torah, the high priest wore an ephod as part of his set-apart priestly clothing. It was not supposed to be a random religious object made by anyone anywhere.

So Gideon’s ephod was dangerous because it looked spiritual, but it was not commanded by YAHUAH.

This is important:

Not everything that looks holy is authorized by YAH.
