Sense in this verse

In John 13:4, títhēmi is used with “the garments” to describe Yahushua deliberately setting aside His outer garments—a conscious, intentional action, not something accidental.

Significance of laying aside His garments

1) Choosing the posture of a servant

Foot-washing was the work of the lowest servant. By setting aside His outer garments and taking the towel, Yahushua physically takes the role of a servant—even though He is Lord and Teacher (John 13:13–14).

2) A lived parable of humility and love

The sequence matters:

• He lays aside His garments
• He takes a towel
• He pours water
• He washes feet
